Understanding Car Bottom and Pit Furnaces
Both car bottom furnaces and pit furnaces are batch-type heat treatment furnaces designed for processing large workpieces. While they share similarities, their fundamental designs serve different operational needs.
Car Bottom Furnace Design
In a car bottom furnace, the furnace floor is mounted on a wheeled carriage (car) that can be rolled out of the furnace chamber. This allows easy loading of heavy workpieces using forklifts or overhead cranes directly onto the car. The car then rolls back into the furnace for treatment.
Pit Furnace Design
A pit furnace is installed below floor level with the furnace opening at floor height. Workpieces are lowered into the pit using overhead cranes. This design saves floor space and is particularly useful when headroom is limited. Pit furnaces excel at processing long shaft-type workpieces.
